Australia, England, Haute-Savoie… Caitlin McFarlane, from the antipodes to the Alpine peaks.
At 21, Caitlin McFarlane, born in Oceania and trained in Haute-Savoie, is starting to shake up the hierarchy with her friends of her generation, by managing high bibs rather well. To be confirmed this weekend in Andorra (giant, Saturday 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., slalom Sunday).
This is a special skier who comes from the antipodes! Beware, raw talent, still to be polished. But definitely turned towards the summits. Born in Sydney, Caitlin McFarlane went back up the globe in the other direction to become a skier. Sally her mother, an Englishwoman who lived in Australia and Ian, her father, an Australian who was born… in England before growing up among the Aussies, set their sights on the Alps.
“Good stress instead of fear”
“I moved to Haute-Savoie when I was three. I live in Morzine and I’m still at the Saint-Jean d’Aulps ski club, where I learned to ski at the age of 7. Rémi Cullaz and Jérémy Bonnepart trained me well before I started with the federation,” explains the skier with three nationalities.
Before skiing, Caitlin McFarlane played football, in Morzine with the boys and in the District Haut-Savoyard with the girls, until she joined the Pôle France in Albertville. And then, everything accelerated. In December, she started in Courchevel . In Lienz, a few days later, she scored her first World Cup points (26).
Also worth noting is her first run in rocket mode in the night of Flachau (13th , abandonment in run 2), her 23rd position in giant slalom in Jasna (bib number 68) and the calm that emanates from her person: “I sometimes get stressed at the start of the race but it’s good stress rather than fear,” says the technician. To be continued this weekend in Andorra.
